As everyone knows, Pac-Man is one of the most famous arcade games for its time, and some people still play it for fun. Why was it so great then, and why can it still be good now? Let’s analyze this game.
Design: Pac-man is split into multiple levels where you need to gobble up white dots to score, while avoiding the evil ghosts that try to kill you. While you will mostly be killed before then, you can play for an infinite amount of time. With the game being unusually addicting, you could stay playing for hours and still not beat it. While this is true in theory, if you make it to the 256th level, the right side becomes scrambled, making it impossible to move on. You need to eat all the dots to move on, and it’s pretty easy the first few levels, but it gets harder each time you move forward. There’s not really much to the design, just a bunch of levels to go through and that’s about it.
Gameplay: What really shines is the Gameplay. After all, that’s what got Pac-Man famous. In the 2-D world you roam in, you can move horizontally and vertically with the same going for the ghosts that chase after you. While gobbling the dots, you’ll come across bigger dots that turn each ghost blue, allowing you to eat them and gain points. Your goal is to get every dot to move on to the next level, and you have few lives to go on, making it frustrating at times. The learning curve is almost non-existent, meaning it won’t take long to get the basics. Overall, Pac-Man is an addicting game and can pass the time if you’re bored and looking for something to do.
Presentation: Pac-Man has been moved from console to console for generations and the graphics are decent for their times. Sound isn’t Pac-Man’s strong point, though, as the music is, for the most part, used constantly and, therefore, it gets boring after a while. Once again, though, it’s a game worth playing if you’re bored and want to pass the time.
Overall: Pac-Man is one of the most famous video-game characters in existence and it’s pretty clear why. Fun, simple, addicting, and suspense are the elements of this time-traveler that has made him a smashing success!
